1 | We do not know when or where Francis Cooke was born. It has been suggested England or possibly Holland. The names of his parents have not been found, but we do know that he had a brother Thomas who elected to remain in Holland. On the July 4, 1603 Francis registered his intention to marry Hester Mahieu in Leyden, Holland. It is believed that they were married on July 20, 1603 or a short time later. Hester Mahieu was probably born in France because she was a Haguenot. The origin of the Huguenot is uncertain but it seems to be a general designation for all who were affiliated with the Protestant Reformation in France. She was also a Walloon. The natives of Northern France and Southern Belgium were known as Walloons. Early in 1620 Francis made plans with other Separatists from Leyden Church to come to the New World on the ship "Speedwell", which was going to met the "Mayflower" at Southampton, England. Francis took his older son, John, with him. Hester stayed home and would hopfully come at a later time. The "Speedwell" was found unfit for travel across the ocean after two unsuccessful starts. Those that still wanted to continue the journey transfered to the "Mayflower". Francis and son John, who was about 13 years old were two of those transferring to continue the journey to America. The conditions in the New World were far worse than expected. The hardships of the first year were very great and many lives were lost from the "Great Sickness", as it was called. At least half of the Pilgrims died that first winter. So it was very wise that Hester waited until a later date to sail. Hester spent 3 years of waiting in Holland with her 2 daughters and a younger son. Francis was the 17th signer of the "Mayflower Compact" signed on the "Mayflower" Novermber 21, 1620. In July of 1623 Hester and children came to Plymouth on the ship "Anne" and the following spring the family received two acres on the south side of the brook, toward the bay and four acres toward Strawberry Hill. Francis is buried at the Hill Top Presbyterian Cemetery in Mendham, NJ. The upper half of his stone is broken off and now unreadable but his son's stone right next to it is easily read. | Cooke, Francis (I5009)

29 | Boomerang I long to be a Boomerang - for just a little while To circle back across the years into another time To live again those wonderous days of a time now long since past. To recapture all the magic and really make it last To feel the joy of youth running in my veins To see my mother smile at me and hold me once again To tell me how she loved me - But alas all mortals die And she has joined the legions beneath a Queensland sky And just like the Boomerang, I have to curve in flight For there is no returning to any former life But one day I'll go sailing, arching high and wide And find my loved ones waiting across the great divide. Poem by Maureen Florence Moore Galloway From Family Bible: For my children and their descendants. I have gathered together all the information I can of my ancestors. I only wish I could know you all, as I wish I could have known all who came before me. I hope you find as much love as I found in my mother, father, brothers and sisters, and my husband's family. I, like you, are just passing through, but it would have been nice to have known you all. May God always be with you. Marueen Moore Galloway October 20th, 1971 Buried at Roselawn Cemetery, North St., Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Inscription: Gone to the country over the range.
